Introduction

In this talk, Janelle Wong assesses recent anti-Black, anti-immigrant mobilization in Asian American communities against the backdrop of larger trends in Asian American party and candidate loyalties.  She highlights the convergences and contradictions that have emerged as a critical feature of Asian American politics, especially as they relate to coalition-building and racial justice.

Janelle Wong received her Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Yale University. She is a professor of American studies and a core faculty member in the Asian American studies program at the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the University of Maryland in 2012, she was at the University of Southern California in the departments of political science and American studies and ethnicity. Her most recent book is Immigrants, Evangelicals, and Politics in an Era of Demographic Change (Russell Sage Foundation, 2018). Wong served as co-principal investigator on the 2016 National Asian American Survey and the 2016 Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey. She has co-authored two amicus briefs, one on a voting rights case heard by the Supreme Court and one on the current Harvard admissions case. Her writing supporting race-conscious admissions and affirmative action has been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education and many other media outlets.
