In preparation for Día de los Muertos, join us at the Effron Center for a special Nicho Workshop led by guest artist Veronica Olivares Weber. In this hands-on workshop, participants will create traditional nichos, ornate shadow boxes used to honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away. Deeply rooted in Mexican culture, nichos play a significant role in Día de los Muertos celebrations, serving as a meaningful way to preserve and celebrate the memory of ancestors. You’ll learn both the artistic techniques and the cultural significance behind nicho-making. Using a variety of vibrant materials like paints, sequins, flowers, and miniature objects, you will design and decorate your own personalized 3D wooden box. Along the way, we will explore the rich history of Día de los Muertos, along with the symbolic elements that are traditionally included in nichos. This workshop offers a special opportunity to connect with Mexican traditions while expressing your creativity. By the end of the session, you will take home a beautifully crafted nicho that reflects your personal style, ready to be displayed on your altar or can be displayed at our community altar on Day of the Dead (Oct. 29, 2024) as a tribute to your loved ones during the holiday. Join us at the Effron Center to immerse yourself in this unique cultural art form and prepare for Día de los Muertos in a deeply personal and creative way.
