On September 27, 2019, Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet for a Small Planet and co-founder of the Cambridge, Massachusetts based Small Planet Institute, presented the keynote address in a two-day conference, “Considering the Counterculture: A History in Ideas.”
Lappé traced her personal story and intersecting discussions of health, community, the environment, and politics from counterculture to the present, suggesting paths to sustainable living and democratic solutions through grassroots action.
The conference examined “countercultural” movements, alliances, ideals, and legacy, among other topics. It was organized by Hendrik “Dirk” Hartog, Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor in the History of American Law and Liberty, Emeritus; Dov Weinryb Grohsgal, associate research scholar at Columbia University; and Sarah Malone, communications and events manager for the Program in American Studies.
